Over the weekend, I was listening to Kid Rock’s “Rock n’ Roll Jesus” album. I also finally won a copy of the record on vinyl in the best condition, a rare find, on eBay. Because I can’t get enough of this album right now, let’s make “Roll On” our song of the day. It's a song about coming to terms with yourself and for me, that feels like a very Tuesday thing to do.
I’ve been to a lot of concerts over the years - country concerts, metal concerts, small concerts, sold-out arena concerts. One performance that was a pleasant surprise came from Kid Rock. I saw him in Indianapolis in 2013 when he was touring with Uncle Kracker and ZZ Top on the $20 Best Night Ever Tour. Kid Rock’s set that stole the night. He interacted with the audience in a way that made you feel alive and part of the show. Over the weekend, I was listening to Kid Rock’s “Rock n’ Roll Jesus” album. Because of my work, I spend a lot of time on Facebook posting and reviewing automotive content. The “Trending” section of my newsfeed shows mostly vehicle news but today, a little music trivia popped up. June 14th marked 19 years since “I’ll Be Missing You” went to the top of the charts. The song by Puff Daddy, Faith Evans, and 112 remained the No. 1 single in the United States for 11 weeks. The song was released as a tribute to Christopher "The Notorious B.I.G." Wallace in May 1997. I don't listen to a lot of Hip-Hop and R&B music for no reason in particular. When this song was first released, I was six years old and couldn’t appreciate its emotional beauty. Now, I’m making it our song of the day. The timing of the single’s chart-topping anniversary is also very coincidental as today marks the fifth anniversary of the death of a childhood friend of mine. Timing is everything! What do you think of “I’ll Be Missing You?” Share your feelings in the comments section below.
Good news, fellow “Nashville” fans - The show will go on! CMT has agreed to one 22-episode season of our favorite country drama. And yes, a new deal has also been worked out with Hulu to continue streaming the show online. The show may be back, but deals have yet to be agreed to with the original cast. And what is the point of going through all of this if we don’t have Connie Britton back as Rayna James? Or Hayden Panettiere as Juliette Barnes? Let’s keep our fingers crossed that everyone returns! In honor of the good news, “Fade Into You” is our song of the day. Nashies were first introduced to the song in season one when it was performed by Sam Palladio and Clare Bowen (a.k.a. Gunnar and Scarlett). While season four ended with so many interesting things happening (Juliette’s plane disappearing, Maddie coming home, etc.), I am most excited to see what happens with The Exes and Gunnar and Scarlett’s relationship. Thank you for bringing back “Nashville,” CMT! Share your excitement about the show’s return in the comments below.
Tonight, I was suppose to go see country songstress Jo Dee Messina in concert at the Tobin Center. Unfortunately, her concert was canceled. There wasn’t any reason as to why announced but after seeing that lots of tickets were still available, I’m going to guess it was low sales. I enjoy listening to Jo Dee’s music because it doesn’t have all the fluff. It’s straight country and relatable without the whining or poppy extras. I was looking forward to finally seeing her in concert for the first time, but I guess we’ll just have to wait a little longer. Maybe she’ll have a performance come up at Gruene Hall…? My favorite song by Jo Dee, and our song of the day, is “I’m Alright.” Of all the songs she has released, this is the one I relate to the most. It’s all about being happy with what you have. Sure, we may want more for ourselves, but we will always be thankful for what life has brought us. Are you a fan of Jo Dee Messina? Share your favorite song and/or album in the comments below.
Austin has a special place in its heart for Willie Nelson. Beyonce reigns in Houston, and the entire state of Texas claims George Strait. But no Texas-born and bred musician has “made” a city like Selena did (and continues to do) for Corpus Christi. During my first visit to Corpus Christi, I had the honor of visiting the Selena memorial statue on Shoreline Blvd. It is a beautiful tribute to the Queen of Tejano music with “Como La Flor” on repeat over a speaker system. Next week, I’m planning another visit to Corpus with my dad, and I’m hoping that we get the chance to visit the Selena museum. As I plan this Corpus adventure, I have Selena’s “Ones” album on repeat. It’s a compilation of her biggest songs, including “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” and “No Quiero Mas.” I love these songs, but it’s Selena’s hit “No Debes Jugar” that I can’t get enough of today. Let’s make it our song of the day and change #ThrowbackThursday to #TejanoThursday! What is your favorite Selena hit? Share it in the comments section below!
The choices I make in my life are inspired by the people I meet, the places I go, and the things I do. But nothing inspires me like music, and one of the great artists that I look up to most is Dolly Parton. My feelings about Dolly are similar to the ones I have about Frank Sinatra. If you don’t like her, there is something wrong with you. She is a great songwriter, singer, actress, and a fun style icon. I find inspiration in her words and wit. One of my favorite Dolly quotes is: “The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” My favorite song by Dolly, and our song of the day, is “Light of a Clear Blue Mornin’.” I find the hope and assurance in this song that others turn to Gospel music for. When I first moved to San Antonio and didn’t know anyone or anything about the city, I would listen to this song for an added boost of courage before starting my day. These days, when things start feeling a little uncertain, I listen to it as a reminder that troubles come and pass. Have a favorite Dolly Parton song? Movies are just as much of an escape for me as music. There are those times that I just need to unplug from the rest of the world and relax. Last night, I went to the movies to see “Me Before You” and did just that. For those who don’t know, “Me Before You” tells the story of Lou, a chatty and quirky British girl trying to make ends meet and support her family. She takes a job as a caregiver for Will, a wealthy young man who was paralyzed in an accident. They become great friends as Lou brings laughter and light into Will’s life. While watching the movie, I was reminded of the emotional Reba McEntire hit “Just Like Them Horses.” After his accident, Will was very depressed and ready to let go. His family wasn’t prepared for that, so he agreed to live for six more months. Will’s parents hold out hope that the connection he builds with Lou will change his mind about ending his life. I’m stopping here because I don’t want to give away any spoilers. “Just Like Them Horses” is our song of the day, and I encourage you to go see “Me Before You.” Bring some tissues! Share your opinions of “Me Before You” and/or “Just Like Them Horses” in the comments below.
Just as I predicted on Saturday, memories were made during my road trip with the Alamo City Rollergirls. We came home with a loss, an injury, and few hours of sleep, but Las Pistoleras played hard, and our group had a blast kicking back and relaxing afterwards. One of the best moments of our Abilene, Texas adventure involved the popular family movie “Space Jam.” Yes, the 1990s movie starring Michael Jordan and the cast of Looney Tunes. A certain skater (who shall remain nameless, but she knows who she is!) compared another skater’s arm length to “Michael Jackson from Space Jam.” After she was corrected and told that some of her league mates don’t like the film, this certain skater started crying. There may have been a few adult beverages involved in this incident, but it was still incredibly hilarious! To commemorate another beautiful weekend spent with ACRG and this great memory, I’m making the “Space Jam” theme our song of the day. It was performed by the Quad City DJ’s and featured on the “Space Jam” movie soundtrack. Share what you did this weekend or what you think of the “Space Jam” movie in the comments section below.
Sundays should be spent relaxing with your family and friends before starting another work week. Most of my Sundays are spent with my roller derby family at practice and after practice lunches. I can’t think of a better way to unwind before the Monday Slump. When I was little, the Sunday tradition was to go to church with my family and then caravan back to Nana and Papa’s house for Sunday dinner. I would play with my cousins, sit around bonfires, and sneak into Nana’s garden to munch on raw rhubarb with my sister. Sundays like these, ones spent with people I truly care about, remind me of the song “Y’all Come.” It was originally written and performed by Arlie Duff but has since been covered by musicians such as Bill Monroe and Porter Wagoner. This song is a great reminder to never be a stranger to your family and to spend as much time with them as you can. “Y’all Come” is our song of the day. Share what songs remind you of your family, or your thoughts on this song, in the comments below. It’s another roller derby-filled weekend! Members of my league, the Alamo City Rollergirls, are heading to Abilene, Texas to take on the Abilene Sugarbombs. Half of the fun is getting there, and I’m excited to go on another road trip with members of my league. Growing up, I made one road trip several times - one with my family to go see more family in Arkansas. I remember having a lot of fun in the car with help from the radio. Some of the best moments came from listening to the strangest song selections. One of my most memorable road trip moments happened in St. Louis while Cher’s “Believe” was playing. My mom was driving, and it was my sister’s turn to sit in the front seat. When Cher’s hit started playing, my sister got the idea to dance while awkwardly looking out the window at the surrounding traffic. The other drivers who saw her gave her a hilarious “WTH” look while my mom and I were dying from laughter. In all the fun, however, Mom ended up taking a wrong exit and getting us lost in St. Louis. In honor of classic road trip moments, I’m making “Believe” our song of the day. Have a favorite road trip song or memory? Share it in the comments below. |
